Title: One More Chance (Chance #2, Rosemary Beach #8)
Author: Abbi Glines
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 256 pages
Rating: 4.5 stars
Grant Carter did everything in his power to convince Harlow Manning that he was a good guy. More than a smooth-talker and someone she could trust. He had to overcome his reputation as a playboy, and his history with Harlow’s half-sister, Nan, a woman with a reputation of her own.
Harlow had taken the chance, falling hard and fast for the guy who thrilled her with his all-consuming desire. After a lifetime of avoiding bad boys like Grant, she had opened herself to the possibilities of love…
But a life-changing secret has torn them apart, and now Grant and Harlow must decide if they have enough fight to make it work – or if the pain of betrayal has permanently destroyed their future.
Before you get mad at me for getting an ARC, I didn’t. I preordered this book weeks ago on Amazon so that I had books for the Atria Indie Tour that is coming to my area. Low and behold, it arrived early. So the lesson here is, preorder and you just might find a treat on your doorstep.
Now that I have that out of the way, on to the review.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. I actually wasn’t a fan of Grant Carter in Take A Chance. I didn’t like how he treated Harlow, or Nan, and I don’t even like her. His going back and forth between the two sisters was selfish and just plain wrong. I realize that he didn’t intend to hurt either of them, but just once, I’d like these guys to think with their heads and not their dicks. But, before I go and totally dismiss Grant, he redeemed himself in this book. While I personally wouldn’t put him on my BBF list, he won me over, as a genuinely good guy. His heart is now 100% with Harlow and he proves it over and over again. I wasn’t mad at him at any point in this follow-up story. Through his words and actions, he sold me on his good character. And of course, he brings the sexy times.
While Grant’s change was a surprise to me, it was more surprising how emotional this book was for me. Yes, I’m a bit of a crier. But I think most people will find this story as emotional as I did, so I’d recommend tissues with this book. My eyes teared up on a number of occasions, but who was the first to make the tears fall? Fucking Kiro! Crazy, right? That’s two books in a row his breakdowns affect me. Jeez.
“You don’t know what it’s like to love someone like I love Emmy. You have no fucking clue. And Harlow is part of Emmy. My Emmy.’
I won’t give away the storyline here, but this was a beautiful story about two people fighting for love. The letters Harlow writes throughout the book are touching and may cause a few tears on their own. They show the strength Harlow has to fight and to love. Despite a damaged heart, she shows repeatedly that while she has a heart defect, her heart is stronger than many others.
My heart has always been weak, but loving Grant made it strong.
The most shocking part of the book . . . wait for it . . . Nan gets some redemption.
Really! You read that right.
I believe my first thought was, “it’s about fucking time.” We also briefly get her POV and you can see how much pain she is keeping hidden.
I didn’t deserve shit. I was alone in this world, and it was all my fault. I didn’t see that ever changing, because I would have to let the me I once was free, and I couldn’t do that again.
Now, before you think she is completely reformed, I can tell you that she remains her bitchy self through most of the book. However, her moment of selflessness made to so happy. I’m dying for her book now!
But it looks like we will have to wait for her redemption book – Bethy and Tripp’s story is next, out in December. They are mentioned on occasion in this book, as they still struggle with Jace’s death. I’d expect their story to be an emotional one as well.
I’ve always enjoyed this Rosemary Beach series, it is a bit of a train wreck that I can’t look away from. And while Woods Kerrington will remain my favorite male character, this is now my favorite book of the series. Abbi took a step away from the crazy drama and focused on a beautiful love story. This HEA was worth waiting for!
“It’s time we lived without fear. You’re the most wonderful chance I ever took.”
