Book Review: Screwdrivered by Alice Clayton

Title: Screwdrivered (Cocktail #3)
Author: Alice Clayton
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Length: 256 pages
Rating: 4.5 stars

Readers back for a third round of the bestselling Cocktail series will enjoy a madcap romantic comedy about bodice ripping and chest heaving, fiery passion and love everlasting. Plus a dash of paperwork filing and horseshi—wait, what?

By day, Viv Franklin designs software programs. By night, Vivian’s a secret romance-novel junkie who longs for a knight in shining armor, or a cowboy on a wild stallion, or a strapping firefighter to sweep her off her feet. And she gets to wear the bodice—don’t forget the bodice.

When a phone call brings news that she’s inherited a beautiful old home in Mendocino, California from a long-forgotten aunt, she moves her entire life across the country to embark on what she sees as a great, romance-novel-worthy adventure. But romance novels always have a twist, don’t they?

There’s a cowboy, one that ignites her loins. Because Cowboy Hank is totally loin-ignition worthy. But there’s also a librarian, Clark Barrow. And he calls her Vivian. Can tweed jackets and elbow patches compete with chaps and spurs? You bet your sweet cow pie.

In Screwdrivered, Alice Clayton pits Superman against Clark in a hilarious and hot battle that delights a swooning Viv/Vivian.

Also within this book, an answer to the question of the ages: Why ride a cowboy when you can ride a librarian?

Grace Review
This third installment of the Cocktail seres focuses on Vivian. You might remember her from Rusty Nailed. We meet her at Simon Parker’s reunion.

What I love about Alice’s books, is her comic timing. Just like an old sitcom, I’d expect her books to come with a laugh track. There’s the setup, the joke, and the laughs follow. Every. Time.

“I want someone who will sweep everything off the table, throw me across it, and ravage me to within an inch of my life.  Can you do that, Dick?” . . . .
“Passionate? Out of the ordinary?” He gulped, pulling at his tie. Then a strange look came over his face. “You mean like, in the butt?”

She also write about relatable characters. Sure, they might have beautiful genes, but they are not perfect. Her characters can be a bit goofy, and in Vivian’s case, our heroine for this story, she is a bit of a danger magnet. I could totally relate.

In this story, Alice also pokes fun of the romance reader *gasp*, but have no fear, it’s all in good fun. You see, Vivian (Viv) has a bit of a smut obsession. When she’s not reading about it, she’s dreaming about it. Those dreams carry into her everyday life where she believes she is living in a romance novel.

* There’s the adventure of a surprise inheritance.
* The heroine, Viv.
* The hunk ‘o’ hunk of burning love, the cowboy Hank.

* The “villain”, Clark.
* Lots and lots of sexual tension.

So, of course there should be lots and lots of sex in this book, right? Think again. Other than Viv’s elaborate dreams, you’re gonna have to wait for the sparks to fly in this book.

Although Viv is Simon’s friend and he does make an appearance in the book *happy dance*, Caroline has a bigger overall role of this hot couple. She becomes an ally of sorts as Viv battles with her “annoying” librarian. But even that partnership backfires a bit for Viv. While it is predictable how the story would play out (this is an example where less of the storyline in the synopsis would have been good), I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

My only complaint about the book would be that the actual love portion of the book was very short. When Viv finally realizes who her dream guy is, and they get on the same page, the book is pretty much over. We do get a sweet epilogue thought. I just wanted more of the sexy times.
