Casey Markham is a man-eater in a rut. Swearing off relation- ships may keep her heart safe, but she’s beginning to question if her casual flings will ever leave her satisfied. She’s wondering if it’s finally time to let go of the past and stop letting history control her future.
Bad boy biker, Tenn Jennings can’t get Casey off his mind. A chance encounter with the beautiful blond has left its mark, and now he’s determined to prove her wrong about everything she thought she knew about men.
It’s safe to say… Casey Markham has met her match.
SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED can be read as a stand-alone.
This is a story about taken chances. Opening your heart, at the risk of heartbreak or for the chance at something special.
Through the four previous Last Call books in this series, we slowly got to know Casey Markham. Gabby’s BFF, sister of Hunter and Brody, and one-night stand lover. We only get bits and pieces of her in those stories, so was definitely eager to see why she was the way she was. And I have to admit, her reasons were kind of lame. She closes herself off and sets a isolated path, that I expected the backstory to be . . . I don’t know. . . bigger. And when I think about it, her knee jerk reaction to what happened didn’t make a lot of sense. She kind of became the exact person she was wrongly portrayed to be.
“It’s self-preservation at its simplest form.”
While Casey has been a no-relationship, love-isn’t-for-me type of girl for years, even she is getting tired of the string of trysts with a short timetable. So who can shake her out of her rut? A sexy military/biker/cowboy, of course. And no I’m not making that up. Tenn, named after the poet not the state, is indeed a former Marine, who was buddies with . . . wait for it . . . Nix Caldwell, from the Off series. *squeals* He also is the son of a big time rancher, with a love for motorcycles.
The two meet casually, but a further connection is made since Tenn is Andrea’s brother’s friend. While Tenn is really comes off as the opposite guy Casey usually goes for, she can’t ignore the insta-lust between them.
While I really liked Casey in the other books in this series, I didn’t like her as much in this book. She makes some immature decisions at times and seemed a bit selfish, with little regard for Tenn’s feelings. Fortunately, she rights her wrongs quickly, but the bad impression was still there for me.
Tenn on the other hand was great. Other than being a romance lover trifecta (military-cowboy-biker), I liked just about everything about him. He’s got drive, determination, loyalty, and tenacity. Balance that with the Alpha badassness with occasional sensitive side, and you have a winner in my book. Oh yeah, did I mention that he also has a teenage daughter he adores? *sigh*
“You’re stuck in a rut of your own making . . . maybe for self-preservation, maybe not . . . but your boundaries have stunted the woman you are meant to be.”
As a couple, Tenn truly brings out the best in Casey. He finally get her to open up to the idea of something more than hot sex, and begins to breakdown the walls around her heart.
There is a bit of a sad twist that challenges there relationship. A secret is exposed and while it doesn’t really seem like a big thing, Casey handles it badly. But the angst in this book, like the author’s other’s books is mild, so she doesn’t draw out the moment too long.
“Gonna prove you wrong again.”
Overall, I’m glad Casey finally got her shot at love. Finding it in the most unlikely of men. While I think this might be the last book in the series, I wouldn’t mind a spinoff story about Woolf, Tenn’s brother. He most definitely has me intrigued.
*An ARC was received for an honest review.
