FAIR GAME (The Rules Series, Book 1) May 12, 2015

Bad enough Jade Frost’s boyfriend drags her to a boring poker game. Even worse that he actually threw her into the betting pot during an intense round…and lost. Talk about the perfect excuse for Jade to make him her ex-boyfriend.

Now she supposedly belongs to the ultra rich, extremely gorgeous Shep Prescott. He could have anything he wants yet he seems to be in hot pursuit of her. No matter how rude, how snarky, how impossible she acts, it doesn’t stop him. More like her horrible behavior seems to make him want her more.

When she finds herself starting to fall for him, Jade’s confused. There’s more to Shep than the carefree rich charmer he portrays. No way could he want a serious relationship with her…or could he?

Grace Review

One bet.
One manwhore.
One sexual self-conscious female.

She supposedly hates him.
He doesn’t date and she’s not his type.
They shouldn’t work.
Yet, they can’t stop thinking about each other.

This is a familiar theme of the manwhore reforming for someone who doesn’t fit his typical target, so to speak.  It also has that trendy hate-to-lust theme.  And while the themes are common, the author still makes the story a captivating one.

What I liked:
Shep Prescott.

He’s priviledged, in a I-can-have-anything-I-want, kind of way, yet it bores him.  He’s arrogant.  And he’s a self-professed manwhore, who has no apologies for how he and his friends, Tristan and Gabe, treat women.

So I should hate him, right?  Nope.  Couldn’t do it.

Maybe it was his evolution from his “one night” rule, to a love sick fool.
Maybe it was his devotion to Jade.  Sure, he fucks it up once, but he owns up to that fuck up, and he never looks back.
Maybe it’s how he put his girl before his obnoxious family, no matter what the consequences.

And it is all of that.  But I think the biggest reason was his openness to change once he met Jade.  Yes, it started off as a bet, but he quickly feels something more.  Once committing to her, he never looks back.  Even under the weight of his friends and family.

What I didn’t like:
I get insecurities.  As a fellow ginger, trust me, I get it.  It was clear from the beginning that Shep had an interest in Jade.  Yet it seemed like every page, she doubted herself, or thought Shep had ulterior motives.

Initially, I liked her spunk, and how she kept pushing Shep away by insulting him.  I wish that version of Jade continued.  But as she fell under his spell, she lost most of that spunk and became kind of weak.

I also felt that book lacked any major drama or angst.  I saw the potential, with former lovers, different social status’ and Shep’s awful parents.  There were moments where I expected something big, but it really turned into nothing.  Maybe this will be a plus for you, but I personally could have handled a bit more angst to drive the storyline.

When it comes down to it, if you are looking for a light, sweet and sexy romance, then look no further.  Shep will win you over, with his arrogant charm, and wanting you to go all in.
