Third baseman Drake Schultz is the undisputed bad boy of the New York Kings. So it’s no surprise when Major League Baseball suspends him for taking performance-enhancing drugs. Furious with their superstar, the front office issues an ultimatum: either work with their sober companion or kiss the rest of his quarter-billion-dollar contract goodbye. Cocky and arrogant, Drake resists being saddled with a live-in babysitter—even one he’s insanely attracted to.

Drake is Eva Sloane’s first celebrity client as a substance abuse counselor, and she knows she’s in trouble when he starts tempting her at every turn. The way he looks at her is as hot as sin, but she refuses to become his new drug of choice. Slowly, she helps him realize he has to face the demons from his past and heal his tortured spirit before he can even think about satisfying any craving he has for her.

Michelle's Review

Wow what an emotional rollercoaster of a read this book was for me!  As some of you may already know, I have been reading a lot of sports theme books no thanks to Grace (just kidding Boss), so when she told me there was a baseball theme I was all in.

Multimillion dollar player for the New York Kings Drake Schultz is in a heap of trouble.  He was just suspended from Major League Baseball for taking performance enhancement drugs.  The front office of the Kings are not letting Drake get away with it either.  He must submit himself to round the clock counseling and rehab from Eva Sloane.  Little did he know that his new “babysitter” is the one woman he’s been obsessed over for many years.

Eva Sloane is a drug counselor and Drake Schultz is her first celebrity client.  Eva has watched Drake’s career for as long as she can remember.  She needs to become his “sober companion” for the next 80 days of his suspension, but she’s not even sure she can help Drake.  Eva’s background is kind of sad, you find out the reasons she becomes a drug counselor.

Throughout Drake’s rehabilitation, Eva finds out so much more than his addiction to HGH, things Drake was so afraid to tell her.  Yet, she has made him open up like no one has.  When you get into the how and why Drake was using, it becomes pretty heartbreaking.  Let’s just say, his mother will not be winning any Mother of the Year awards.  Through their time together, Eva cannot help that besides trying to get Drake sober, she really needs for Drake to feel love.

As I mentioned earlier, this book was very emotional.  What Drake went through growing up, his self loathing, how he pushed his teammates away, it was so sad.  Yet, I loved how he wanted to get sober all for Eva.  There were moments in the book that I thought he would relapse.  I adored Eva and her perseverance with Drake.  She would push him to see the good in himself.  Their chemistry was very strong from the very beginning.  I felt myself not only rooting for Drake but for his and Eva’s relationship to grow.  There is a sweet HEA.  So batter up and read Inside Game.  This was my first time reading a Collette West novel, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball’s biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette’s impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she’s not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at

She is the author of NIGHT GAMES and GAME CHANGER.
