Book Review: Sustained by Emma Chase

Book Title: Sustained (Legal Briefs #2)
Author: Emma Chase
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 304 pages
Rating: 5 stars

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Grace Review

Just in case you didn’t see my broadcasts all over social media, I have a new BBF and his name is Jake Becker!

This wasn’t an insta-love thing for me. I didn’t exactly warm up to Jake’s ways with women, it was all a bit cold. He is focused solely in his career, with no time for women, other than to get him off. But with each page, I began to warm up to him.

Why the change? A random encounter with a pick-pocketer brings him to the doorstep of a woman who catches his attention. Their brief meeting isn’t sexual. How could it be with six kids running among them. And it’s his interaction with this large bunch is really what sparks my interest. Around 38%, I’m already looking at my BBF list to see if he should be added. By 80%, he’s already got a spot on the list at #5. Why is this a big deal? Because I haven’t added anyone to this top 5 for over a year. This guy is the real deal!

So, back to this story. What makes it so special is not just:
Jake with Chelsea
Jake with the kids
Chelsea with the kids
It’s a combination of all of the above. While Jake may never had kids pictured in his life plan, and Chelsea had a whole other life before them, I never doubted for a second that these eight people were meant to be together forever.  As we get pieces of their interactions together, I fell in love with them, as much as they fell in love with one another.

In case you haven’t noticed, empathy isn’t my strong point.  And crying teenagers?  This feels kind of like a bigfoot encounter – I’ve heard about it on TV, read about it in the papers . . . but this is the first time I’ve actually seen one close up.

It was beyond sweet to see Jake’s transformation. Sure, his immediate attraction to Chelsea was a motivator, and maybe he initially helped out with the kids to get close to her, but it doesn’t take long before you see his commitment is so much deeper. One phone call about the kids had him dropping everything. And with each moment he spends with them, I feel deeper in love.

And when someone believes in you, goes out on a limb for you when they have no obligation to do shit – it has impact.  It made me want to look in the mirror and see the man he knew I could be.

Now, if Jake perfect? No, he doesn’t have several stupid moments where he pulls the “I’m not good enough” bs. Why did he stay in my good graces although making my heart hurt? Because he never walked away from the kids. He saw how desperately they needed love, for anyone, and in his time with Chelsea, he grew just as dependent on them.

Career wise, I wondered how Jake would move forward. His career direction seemed to be at odds with how we was around the kids. As a defense attorney, he spent a living rescuing a bunch of people who didn’t deserve to be rescued. Eventually he sees this conflict too and finds way to make things right. He becomes a man who feels worthy of Chelsea. I knew it all along, but these book boyfriends, sometimes they get a bit lost.

This is that book, that book that will give you all of the feels. One you will finish with a permanent grin. As a reader, sometimes you get in a rut. Either you suffer from a book hangover or all the books start to sound the same. This book will not only cure a book hangover (may give you another – sooooorrry), but it will stand out for the sea of other romance books. Not only will you fall in love with Jake (still MINE, just a reminder), but you’ll fall in love with Chelsea, and the six Rs – Riley, Rory, Raymond, Rosaleen, Regan, and Ronan. Eight might be enough on TV (if you don’t get this, you’re too young), but I would join the crazy family in a heart beat.
