Grace Review

Vengeance, hate, guilt.  All consume a man on his journey from dark to light.  This story morphs from a horrific kidnapping, flashing back to youthful innocence later destroyed at the hands of a Mexican cartel, and evolves to a beautiful love story.  While this story has dark elements, I wouldn’t classify it as a dark romance.

This author caught my attention with the emotional gripping love triangle in 53 Letters to My Lover.  When I heard about this new release, I didn’t even read the synopsis before requesting it.  I just knew it would be something unique.  Sitting down, I finally glanced at the synopsis and wondered, “what the hell am I’m getting into here?”

Skye has the perfect life.  Or is that life all an illusion?  She’s taken from that life in a brutal fashion, barely escaping death.  Without knowing the who’s and why’s, she is part of another’s plot of revenge.  Can she survive her capture, physically and emotionally?  Or can she break down her capture, and make him feel, anything?

This story is told in alternating POVs, but in sections.  It’s not until 24% into the story when a major twist is revealed, and switching POVs, we finally learn those who’s and why’s.

I loved how this story was built.  Through a series of flashbacks, we see into Skye’s childhood, and how those around her, changed the course of her life, through a series of selfish actions.  With each change in POV, we get another layer to the story.  You get to see how the desire for vengeance is built.  How it consumes every part of a man and blinds him, where love isn’t even strong enough to dull the rage.

I finally understood what I had seen in his eyes.  Black battling black. . .  (spoiler removed) . . . Cruelty with glimpses of mercy.  Friendship holding vengeance back by a thread.

Skye is one hell of a strong heroine, managing to fight for her life at every step.  While she is willing to accept her fate and accept death, when small opportunities to fight present themselves, she doesn’t hesitate to take action.  And she has an amazing capacity for forgiveness.  I wondered about her psyche and how she could make such an emotional change, but I admired her at the same time.

Damion (Dah-me-yahn) was a hard character to digest at first.  He is ruthless, callous, and cold.  But he has small moments of kindness, exposing another side of him.  I loved getting his POV, seeing what drove him to act so harshly.  And while he shows moments of growth, it seems he can’t get past his desire to destroy those who ruined his life.

“You can either choose love or you can choose hate, because where one lives, the other will die.”

With strong character development, layers to the storyline, a full arch of emotions, and a poetic voice, this author drew me into this beautifully corrupt world.  Despite their traumatic pasts and the pain they caused each other, I was absolutely invested in the love story.  And I loved how both Skye and Damion returned to that past, leaving the dark and creating a new life in the light.

This is a beautiful story that will hook you, break you, and put you back together.  A MUST READ!

“You don’t always get the treasure by holding on.  Sometimes the magic happens when you let go.”
