Sometimes, believing the lies we tell ourselves is easier than dealing with the truth.

Once, I wanted to die. That was the night I met Guy.

The strange man with flowers stepped from the shadows and saved my life.

Guy. Dimpled smile. Body of a surf god. Smart and funny. Running out of time.

We became travelling companions through life, ticking off items on our bucket lists.

I’d hidden from happiness for years and kept my life under strict control. Guy showed me how to step into the world and experience more,

he brought light into the shadows and helped me through the darkness.

I became Phe again. I lived.

There’s just one problem.

We fell in love and this wasn’t part of our plans.

I thought we could face the future together, but Guy has a secret which changes everything.

Grace Review

A thought provoking look at pain and sadnesss and the struggle of two people to overcome it.

From the very first page of this book, I knew I was in for an emotional ride. Phe and Guy meet on the edge of a cliff. One with clear intentions, the other, not so much. Their initial meeting is intense and sad, but Guy makes a difference that changes the course of Phe’s life.

“Number nine: Save someone’s life.”

During their brief meeting, Guy convinces Phe to create a bucket list like his own. If you understand what a bucket lists are, then you know what you are in store for with this story. The two of them have lists for very different reasons (which I’ll keep to myself). Eventually, Guy has Phe also agreeing to work on their lists together, first beginning merely as companions, and later developing into a friendship and more, along the way.

Writing a bucket list is an acknowledgement of a future I denied I had, as I sunk beneath the quicksand of my present.

Both Phe and Guy are reluctant to open up about their pasts. Phe’s past is mentioned in parts, but it wasn’t until late in the book that she reveals the painful story in full. It is incredible sad and shocked me. My heart broke for her and I completely understood why she struggled.

“Keep your head above the water.”

As for Guy, he too is guarded, revealing his reason for a bucket list. With his confession, I expected this story to go one direction, an immensely sad one, but it went a completely different one. Just like Phe, I sensed that there was more to his story than what he is sharing. I should have put the pieces together sooner, but didn’t and was caught off guard.

I thought the barriers between us were all mine, but his became more visible each time.

While there is plenty of heartbreak in the book, this story left me feeling uplifted rather than depressed. There’s a great message about survival and overcoming fears. I loved how Phe and Guy were there for each other (most of the way).

With the beginning of this book, you’d think Phe was a weak heroine, but I found her to be the opposite. While she leaned on Guy initially, she comes into her own throughout the book and I couldn’t help but supporter for that.

Don’t let the emotional weight of this plot scare you away. This was a beautiful story and ultimately, a heartwarming one.
