Gloria Navarro met and married her soul mate. When he died, she felt she’d never know that kind of love again. But when she finds a love letter between the pages of a book and the man who wrote the missive, she starts to believe lightning might strike twice.

To Bryan Dunn, love is a four-letter word. He doesn’t go in for cheap sentiment or hearts-and-flowers. But he wants Gloria, and to get her, he’ll let her believe he wrote the silly letter. The longer he’s with her, though, the more he cares. If she discovers the truth about him, it just might break the heart he never thought he had.

New to me author: When I looked up Nona Raines on Goodreads, I’d had no idea that she has so many books out, or that this novella was actually a sequel of sorts to her book, Read to Me. It didn’t hinder my enjoyment of this story, but it does make me want to seek out more by her. I like Ms. Raines’ writing style, with a lyrical slant without getting flowery and a good amount of descriptors to set the tone.

Interesting setup: I liked that Bryan and Gloria’s meeting through a half-written letter left in a book of poems, an unusual opening gambit for a love story. Gloria has a soft spot for the romantic outpouring and Bryan is more than willing to use that for a chance to get to know Gloria. The misunderstanding is crucial yet believable.

Gloria’s a strong Latina heroine: I adored that Gloria is Latina and it informs alot of little moments throughout the story without becoming the focal point. That she’s loved and lost and is confident in herself and what she’s achieved is admirable and even when the inevitable happens, I really liked that she stood up for herself and called things as she saw them.

Novella length hinders development: I truly wished that the story was longer and more time spent in giving Gloria and Bryan more time getting to know each other. The transition from attraction to love was very quick and told to the reader instead of being shown, and shortcuts were taken to wrap up the story with the final reunion being sweet but rather abrupt.

I liked it. I think the writing was interesting. I only wish it had been a bit longer.
