Author Spotlight (Interview): CJ Roberts

☆ ☆ ☆ Author Spotlight: CJ Roberts @AuthorCJRoberts ☆ ☆ ☆

As far as we are concerned, the Dark Duet series by this author is the GOLD standard for dark romances.  Will you be unconfortable or upset at times?  Yes.  Will you fall in love with Caleb?  Maybe.  Either way, this author will put you and Livvie through a heart-pounding, thought provoking, emotional ride.  Just what you’d expect from a dark romance.

On top of writing one the best series’ in this genre, the author is sweet as can be and I (Grace) adore her style!  We are thrilled to interview her for our Month of Darkness – I think you’ll enjoy her answers as much as we did!

Describe your last release in 5 words or less (include title of book).

CJ: Filthy, uncompromising, guy-guy-girl captive smut. “Determined to Obey”, Nov 2014

What are you currently writing?

CJ: A prequel to a novel very few people will read because of its sheer taboo audacity!! I’ve halted work on my COMMITMENT project.

How did you decide on writing in the dark romance genre?

CJ: I didn’t. It’s just how my work is categorized most often. I don’t write for a category. I blend the incredibly taboo with the sexy, and throw in real-world horror because it’s the only thing I CAN do. If I could write for the mainstream, I would. That’s where the masses are. That’s where the movie money is, lol. I’d love to be able to write a nice, sweet, smoldering romance where the hero is good and the villain is bad, and the love is deep and true, and one of them dies of a horrible disease because Nicholas Sparks and John Greene are brilliant assholes… but all my attempts are horrible!

Who was/is your favorite character to write?

CJ: Who knows? I fall in love so many times and I never really fall out.

What was the hardest scene you’ve ever written (without spoilers)?

CJ: In “Seduced in the Dark”, Livvie describes having a dream about someone she’s lost. I wept the entire time because it’s based on a dream I have sometimes where I’m chasing my father to give him a hug and I can never catch  up to him (he passed away several years ago). It’s not even a big deal in the book, just a paragraph, but I remember feeling drained afterward.

Where are you in the process for putting the Dark Duet series on the small screen?  Do you have a dream cast?

CJ: The last I heard (March), they were looking for a show-runner and putting together a package. While I don’t want to raise any false hopes, I’m cautiously optimistic that something will happen. I do have a dream cast though, and you can nominate yours on The IF List:

What is your favorite dark read by another author?

CJ: “Insidious” by Aleatha Romig or “Under Mr. Nolan’s Bed” by Selena Kitt

Do you read romance books out of your genre?  If so, which is your favorite?

CJ: Almost all the books I read are outside my genre. My favorite is M/M romance, paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, and yaoi manga. In that order. Followed by heterosexual paranormal romance, and dark as f**k erotica. I’m shocked I write men/women relationships.

Do you celebrate Halloween?  If yes, what was your favorite costume to dress up in?

CJ: Yes and I once went as Frank N’ Furter from “The Rock Horror Picture Show”

Name one thing you are afraid of (spiders, clowns, etc.).

CJ: Focused attention. QUICK! LOOK OVER THERE!

Vampires, werewolves or other?

CJ: Other. I’ve always wanted to have a meaningful relationship with one of the fringe supernatural species; maybe a nice tentacle monster who just wants to tie me down, feel me up, and drench me in viscous goo that is both nourishing and depleting. Seriously, who needs conversation? Oh and… Thanks, Japan.

Favorite scary movie?

CJ: Pet Sematary (I can spell, that’s the movie title)

Final question: who is your favorite Star Wars character?

CJ: Darth Vader. I want him to rail me with all his stuff on.

Thanks CJ!

Book Title: Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet #1)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 276 pages

Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence.

Book Title: Seduced in the Dark (The Dark Duet #2)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 505 pages

The exciting, titillating, and action-filled conclusion to Captive in the Dark.

What is the price of redemption?

Rescued from sexual slavery by a mysterious Pakistani officer, Caleb carries the weight of a debt that must be paid in blood.

The road has been long and fraught with uncertainty, but for Caleb and Livvie, it’s all coming to an end.

Can he surrender the woman he loves for the sake of vengeance?

Or will he make the ultimate sacrifice?

It seemed to Caleb, the nature of human beings revolved around one empirical truth: we want what we cannot have. For Eve, it was the fruit of the forbidden tree. For Caleb, it was Livvie.

Book Title: Epilogue (The Dark Duet #3)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 209 pages

I’m writing this because you begged. You know how I love the begging. In fact, you probably know too many things and know them far too well. Who am I? Well, that’s what I’m trying to figure out. I was a whore in my youth, a killer since my adolescence, and a monster as a man. I am the man who kidnapped Livvie. I am the man who held her in a dark room for weeks. But, most importantly, I am the man she loves. She loves me. It’s quite sick, isn’t it? Of course, there’s more to our story than can be surmised in a few short sentences, but I’m at a loss for justifying my behavior back then. I assume if you’re reading this, I don’t need to make those justifications. You’ve already made your own. You’re reading this because you want to know about the rest of the story. You want to know what happened that warm summer night in September of 2010, the night I met Livvie at The Paseo. It was the night my life changed all over again. It didn’t happen exactly as Livvie said. She’s been very kind to me in the retelling of our story. The truth is far more…complicated.

Book Title: Determined to Obey (The Dark Duet #3.5)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 79 pages

The character “Kid” appears in both Captive in the Dark andSeduced in the Dark.

This novella takes place in Mexico and follows Kid after he and his girlfriend, Nancy, are taken hostage by a group of men led by Caleb. Unbeknownst to Kid or Nancy, they are taken to the mansion of Felipe Villanueva, an eccentric crime boss with a taste for the taboo.

We join Kid in the dungeon, where he is about to meet Felipe and his companion Celia for the first time…

Warning: 18+ only. Very frank language, graphic sexuality and coercion. Do not read if M/M/F bothers you!

Determined to Obey is being published independently at the request of thousands of fans who already own Captive in the Dark, Seduced in the Dark, and Epilogue: The Dark Duet–known together as theDark Duet series.

Determined to Obey was written as part of the bonus material forDark Duet: Platinum Edition and not meant to be read as a stand alone. However, it is possible to enjoy it as such if one prefers.
