There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a god and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

Becoming Calder is the story of good versus evil, fear versus bravery, and the truth that the light of love has always found its way into even the darkest of places . . . From the beginning of time, to the end of the world.

THIS IS THE FIRST PART IN A TWO-PART SIGN OF LOVE SERIES INSPIRED BY AQUARIUS. THE SECOND PART, FINDING EDEN, IS AVAILABLE NOW. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and graphic sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Grace Review

When I first started this book, it reminded me of The Village by M. Night Shyamalan (minus the mysterious creatures), and sadly, a bit about the true story of Jonestown.  Read that first sentence again, and you will understand how unique and special it is that the author created a love story in this setting.

The Acadia community was odd to begin with, led a Hector, and old jackass, and his Council of minion jackasses, who communicate rules and prophecies to their people.  This whole group became downright disturbing when Eden is introduced.

“And so she has come to live with us, a child who before was an orphan, alone in the world.  And when she reaches her eighteenth year, she will become my beloved, my one and only bride.”

SAY WHAT?!

As whacked as that whole idea is to comprehend, I loved how the relationship with Calder and Eden developed.  It’s insta-love and that didn’t bother me at all.  As you can tell as the story progresses, these two are truly soulmates.

Eden, yeah, she was definitely a morning glory: as pretty as a flower. with the strength of a weed.

The way they took chances to be together, and leave each other gifts/notes, was sweet given their ages.  There is underage sex, which sometimes can be uncomfortable to read, but the author handled it well so it didn’t seem inappropriate.

It’s my heart that wants you to be my destiny.

The story balanced beauty with ugliness – Calder and Eden vs. Hector and Clive (one of the minion jackasses).  Those two men made my skin crawl, and it sickened me the actions they took to keep the two lovers apart.

Thankfully for Calder and Eden, they have a friend like Xander is a great best friend for Calder.  He and Calder have develop an elaborate plan to escape and the two take a lot of risks to protect each other, as well as Eden.

This was an emotional story, of love and sacrifice, in the bizarre setting, making the story unique.  The author created a fascinating story, that was familiar yet fresh. With the prologue in this book and then ending, the future for this couple is completely uncertain, and I can’t wait for more.

Grace Review

Based on how Becoming Calder ended, I had no idea what to expect from this story.  Did I think Eden and Calder would be separated for so long?  HELL NO!  The minute I saw the timeline change, I became concerned.

My fears of what could have happened with Eden and Calder’s time apart, were validated immediately, and then quickly dismissed.  I had to remind myself, and I will remind you, that Eden and Calder are soulmates.  The circumstances that bring them back together, only prove that concept.  The immediate passion and overwhelming feelings they go thru, showed the depth of their connection.

What I loved about this story was how this couple adapted to their new lives, and struggled with any reminder of the past.  This story takes the bones of the first story, and develops everything, from character growth to answers about how the whole Acadia society began.

It was sad how the media and vandals treated Eden and Calder once their story was exposed, but thankfully they had a lot of people in their court to help them with the struggle – Xander, Eden’s cousin, Molly, and surprisingly, the police.  With the police, the facts made it clear that Eden and Calder’s story was true.  In fact, they were able to get some justice against one of their former villains.  Karma came knocking!

While Eden was able to reconnect with the past she was torn from, Calder was not so lucky.  Finding answers about their past gave both closure, but exposed some wounds.  My heart broke for him as he felt lost and abandoned, but those feelings are replaced with a lot of anger about his past and why he ended up in Acadia.  Thankfully, he has Eden, and her growing set of friends and family to support him along the way.

Ultimately, this is a beautiful conclusion to Eden and Calder’s story.  Their love runs so deep, it’s hard not to cheer for them as they fight to make new lives for themselves.  The care, support, and passion they share, show how they not only survived and thrived in each other’s presence.  A true love story!

“We all attach things to our hearts, the things we value, the things we need, the things that make us who we are.  But maybe . . . maybe it’s only when our hearts are broken, that those things fall inside.  Maybe it’s only then that those things truly become part of us, and it’s only then we truly understand and recognize pain in others because we’ve experienced it too.  And we’ve let it make us better, more loving.  Perhaps that’s what real mercy is.  Perhaps that’s the purpose to the pain.”
