Ivy's Picks

My Final “Best” for 2015 – @Poison Ivy70

It’s that time of the year again. The time when I sit down with my delicious cup of coquito (it’s Puerto Rican egg nog, yum), wade through the tinsel and try to sort through the massive amounts of books I’ve read to remember – which ones will stay with me long after 2015 is just a faded memory? Which ones did I want to go all Shouty McYellerson and tell my friends, read this, read it now so we can discuss ‘til you tell me to shut up? If you need to laugh, cry, get your pervy on or a bit of all three, I can’t think of a better way of doing it than through books (well, except sex let’s not lie).

Anyhoodle, without further ado, here’s my picks for the best of the year.

Best Ugly Cry: Sometimes, a person just needs to curl up on the couch with a box of tissues, a bottle of water (stay hydrated people, stay hydrated) and a good ugly cry book. My choice this year was The Five Stages of Falling in Love by Rachel Higginson. This book details brilliantly how a person can lose the love of their life, and yet realize that life still goes on. It’s painful and it sure ain’t easy, but life goes on. If you’ve ever lost a loved one, you can relate to the pain, frustration, hope and ultimately joy, that Liz experiences. Just make sure you’ve got your visine and a cold compress ready afterwards.

Best Snort-Laugh: Confession: I never thought I’d root for a romance with a hero named Cletus. After reading Truth or Beard, the first book in The Winston brothers series, I want it so bad I’m ready to move to Tennessee and find my own Winston brother (ok, well, the hubby would probably object, but sacrifices, people, sacrifices). Duane and Jessica’s romance was funny as hell with heart and a genuinely great way to start to this new adventure.

So good it made me want to be a Domme: Cherise Sinclair can write BDSM like nobody’s business. She’s one pervy lady and I love every kinky bit of her. With Servicing the Target, It’s not often that a BDSM book can leave you hot and bothered one minute then all aww with the fuzzy feels. Ms. Sinclair had me loving Anne and Ben’s romance and loving the peek into the HEAs of all my fave Shadowlands couples.

Best Fantasy Romance: Feel the Burn, the latest in the Dragon Kin series by G. A. Aiken, makes me want to visit the land of dragons and two suns, even if there’s some crazy no-eyed God trying to rule it all. The series  is about eight books in now and I cannot recommend it enough. G.A. Aiken is so good, I rarely ever close a book of hers without a smile on my face. Her dragons are my measuring stick by which all my paranormal/urban fantasies are judged. Yes, she’s that damn good.

Best Series of the Year: This was a hard choice. There are so many series that I adore that came out with books this year. After much deliberation (and some more coquito), I have to give it up for the Game On series by Kristen Callihan (The Friend Zone and The Game Plan). Ms. Callihan has rocketed to the top of my auto-buy list with truly stellar writing and characters. Her new adult series made me appreciate the genre.

Best Book of the Year: Do you need to get out of your comfort zone? Do you want a book that will burrow into your brain and rattle around in there for DAYS after you turned the last page? Try R. Lee Smith’s Land of the Beautiful Dead. It’s one of those books that can leave you wondering what the hell you just read and how the hell did this author manage to get you rooting for these people. Yes, it’s great and yes I’m diving into Ms. Smith’s back list as soon as possible. Just, please, please, please ignore that cover.

Best Author: This was hard for me to pick as several favorite authors had books come out this year, several books that I can easily read over and over. However, only one author has captivated me since I first read her books back in 2011. Only one who I have bought all of her books in kindle and audiobook format, and listen to every chance I get. Only one whose various worlds grow and continue to get better every time I read them. My favorite author of the year is G. A. Aiken. Her Dragon Kin series has grown by leaps and bounds and she’s also come out with a new series (The Crows, written under her pen name of Shelly Laurenston) that shows alot of promise.
