Step right up and meet Jay Fields: Illusionist. Mentalist. Trickster.

I think in triangles. You think in straight lines.

I show you a table and make you believe it’s a chair.

Smoke and mirrors, sleight of hand, misdirection. I trick and deceive.

But most of all, I put on a good show.

The world thinks I killed a man, but I didn’t. Bear with me. It’s all a part of the plan.

Revenge is what I want. I want it for me and I want it for her.
I want it for all six of us.

She doesn’t remember me, but she’s the reason for everything. She’ll be my prize at the end of all this–if I can hold onto my willpower, that is. Maybe I’ll slip up a little, have a taste, just a small one.

So go ahead and pick a card. Come inside and see the show. Look at my hands, look so closely that you can’t see what’s happening while you’re so focused on looking. I’ll be destroying your world from right here in the spotlight.

You’ll never see me coming until it’s too late.

I’ve only got one heart, and after I’ve pulled off my grand deception I’ll hand it right to her.

So, sit back, relax, and let my girl tell you our story. You’re in for one hell of a ride.

Grace Review

I bought this book a while ago, but decided to start it for the most unusual of reasons. Our reading group on FB, After Dark Reading voted for it.  To backtrack, I’ve pulled back on some ARC signups so I could read some books I had purchased on my kindle.  Who knows how many of them there are on my kindle, I’m afraid to look.  Anywho, I narrowed down my choices to 3 books and then asked the group to help me decide.  Voila, and this book was the winner.

So did the group let me down?  Hell no.  I loved this book.

The synopsis of this story is a bit hard to grasp.  What was I getting myself into?  There is mention of revenge, and the book begins with a sad and awful crime.  But the revenge aspect of this book takes some time to develop.  The author gives some subtle hints along the way if you are paying attention.  How does Jay know Matilda’s name?  Why is he so adamant for her father to take his case?

When Jay and Matilda first meet, it’s at her Dad’s practice, with Jay desperate to have her father represent him in a slandering case.  Then in a matter of hours, he becomes her new housemate.  It was all very odd and had my spidey senses tingling (to note, mine aren’t very good compared to our other blog reviews).  The two strike up a quick friendship.

This book is primarily told from Matilda’s POV, and we learn of her deep attraction to Jay. We also learn of her incredible insecurity.  That insecurity develops after receiving a large scar from the people who killed her Mom.  Hmmmm?  Is this somehow connected to the death of Jay’s parents?  Only the reader will wonder this, as Jay is very secretive in just about everything with his life.

The author creatively builds this story around magic.  Not everything is as it seems with Jay.  He is crazy smart and obviously a careful planner.  And while Matilda is very much in the dark to his plans, she picks up things along the way that hint at an ulterior motive. The depth of the secrets takes time to be revealed, but once it was, I loved the imagination and patience it took for Jay to put everything together.

Another thing you’ll have to be patient on is the love story.  I’d describe this as a slow burn.  There are moments where Jay alludes to an attraction to Matilda, to helping her out with sexual favors.  But his need to focus on his mission, and her insecurities, kill a lot of their intimate moments. But they’ll come. Don’t worry.

“You’re so full of yourself.”
“You wish you were full of myself,” he retorts.

Usually someone hell bent on revenge, do it for very personal reasons.  And that is also the case here. But Jay is not selfish. He has a good heart and shows many times how willing he is to help others. Yes, he is book boyfriend material.  He’s a good you can get behind and he won’t let you down.  He has a heart of gold and big dreams with a girl that means more to him than she ever expected.

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the rest of the series.  And I’ll give a virtual high five to our group for the recommendation.
