Title: Steadfast (True North #2)

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 313 pages
Rating: 4.5 stars

She’s the only one who ever loved him—and the only one he can never have.

Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there’s no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.

For Sophie Haines, coming face to face with the man who broke her heart is gut-wrenching. Suddenly, he’s everywhere she turns. It’s hard not to stare at how much he’s changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn’t have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he’d never turn up volunteer in the church kitchen.

She knows it’s foolish to yearn for the man who returned all the heartsick letters she wrote him in prison. But the looks he sends her now speak volumes.

No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie’s police chief father. But it’s a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.

This second book in the True North series gives us Jude’s story.  If you read Bittersweet, we all got to meet Jude.  Before I continue, you can read Steadfast and Bittersweet as a standalone, but I would suggest you read Bittersweet first so you can see the journey that Jude had to go through.

Jude leaves the Shipley farm since there isn’t any more apples to pick.  He heads home after doing three years in jail.  Jude is also a recovering drug addict.  He goes back to his hometown where everything went wrong those three years ago.  He was convicted of manslaughter and the last thing he wanted to do was show his face in his old town, but with no work left to do with the Shipley’s back to Colebury, Vermont he went.

Sophie is the girl whose heart he broke, couple with the fact that the person he killed was someone close to her.  Sophie had big dreams to be an aspiring singer in the Broadway circuit, but after the devastation of losing her brother, she has to put the pieces back to her family.  You see, her brother was the “golden boy” of the family.  When she sees that Jude is back in town, she cannot forget the love they both had.  He was the boy she was supposed to stay away from all those years ago.  She also has so many unanswered questions.

This book is definitely different from Bittersweet.  Wherein you get sweet and funny moments in Bittersweet, you will get a more emotional story with Steadfast.  You sensed Jude’s struggles trying to maintain his sobriety.  Father Peters was a Godsend!  You will find yourself rooting for Jude and Sophie.  There is a big twist that will leave you a little shocked.

I loved reading about second chance love and Jude and Sophie so deservedly needed their second chance.  Have some tissues ready because you will shed a tear or two while you read Steadfast. Ms. Bowen never disappoints with her words, I look forward to Zachariah’s story.
