Neighbor cover

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a sexy new STANDALONE novel.

After getting dumped, the last thing I needed was to move next door to someone who reminded me of my ex-boyfriend, Elec.

Damien was a hotter version of my ex.

The neighbor I’d dubbed “Angry Artist” also had two massive dogs that kept me up with their barking.

He wanted nothing to do with me. Or so I thought until one night I heard laughter coming through an apparent hole in my bedroom wall.

Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist.

The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities.

We got to talking.

He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup.

He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more.

Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

I thought my heart had been broken by Elec, but it was alive and beating harder than ever for Damien.

I just hoped he wouldn’t shatter it for good.

Author’s note – Neighbor Dearest is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Neighbor Dearest is my second Penelope Ward standalone.  I have not read Stepbrother Dearest and as the author mentions in her blurb, you do not have to read it before reading Neighbor Dearest.  I will say this, having Elec mentioned in this book, he’s from Stepbrother Dearest, I think I will have to add to my long list TBR.

For those of you who have read SD, you know Chelsea Jameson was left heart broken.  It has been over a year since her breakup with Elec.  She has since moved to a newer apartment.  Chelsea and her sister Jade are checking out her brooding neighbor who she has deemed the “angry artist”.  Little did Chelsea know that Mr. Angry Artist has sensitive ears. “And I’m not anti-social or a savant.  I’m just a good old-fashioned prick … with supersonic hearing.”  Yeah, great start here people.  Poor Chelsea is dealing with her neighbor’s barking dogs, two Rottweilers no less.  Homegirl just wants to get some sleep, the funny thing about the whole situation is that the dogs stop barking whenever she’s around.

Damien and Chelsea form a friendship of sorts, especially after he overhears how her heart got broken (unintentionally mind you), besides that, a little fire that happens at Chelsea is fodder for some great mention of the movie Firestarter.  Damien is the Omen to Chelsea’s Firestarter, see what I did there?

There were lots of funny moments in the book, and just when I think the book is going one way, I was thrown for a loop, not in a bad way people.  There is also some emotions parts to my read, I think I may have reached for my box of tissues.  The sexual tension and banter was a delight, but what I really enjoyed how it Chelsea and Damien really started off on the wrong foot, to being friends then lovers.  I was rooting for them, especially Chelsea because it would break my heart reading how she was a little broken after breaking up with Elec.  Damien cannot fight his feelings for Chelsea “Mythically beautiful.  Unattainable.”  …. “But you’re my unicorn.”   .. “You’re my fucking unicorn, Chelsea.”  Chelsea and Damien do face some challenges, but through it all, there is love.  Now, if only the other can write her sister Jade’s book next, with maybe Tyler who happens to be Damien’s brother, hmmm, could that happen?  Overall, I thoroughly loved reading this book from beginning to end.  It gave a great balance of funny, tears, sexy times, and most of all love.

Tammy review

We all have been dumped.
We all have had a hot neighbor.

But have we all had a hot neighbor that is an ass but you want to bake him muffins because he is that gorgeous?

Probably not but Chelsea sure does. This hot rude mean neighbor is Damien.

Healing a wounded heart Chelsea is not even interested in any man. But a conversation with her sister Jade, has her looking at her neighbor in a new light even if he is rude.

Damien has noticed his neighbor but has sworn off relationships. Not because he wants to play the field but he has a secret that prevents him.

It takes one eavesdrop by Damien that involves a Unicorn THEN barging in because Chelsea leaves the toaster oven on too long because she is reading smut, to stop a fire – these events seal the fate of Chelsea and Damien.

As their friendship grows so does their want for each other.
Each page shows something different and wonderful to their growing romance.
Damien’s secret is revealed and it bonds them even more.
It makes them think of the now and the future and it makes each realize that they simply cannot live without the other.

“A good life is about quality not quantity.”

These two love fierce and put each other before any other wants or needs.

“You know why it didn’t work out with him?”
“Because God made you for me.”

There are some sad moments, some drama moments, some hilarious moments and some fan yourself moments. All these moments give a love story that will hold you in awe of how they see each other with their souls.

Looking tense, he placed his hands slowly into his pockets as he looked at me. “What exactly happened last night?”

“What are you talking about?”

Nice try dodging the question.

He moved in closer to me. “What am I talking about? You leaving me with a giant fucking basket of muffins and running off before I could even say anything? Ring a bell?”

“I thought you’d be alone. It caught me off guard.”

His eyes softened. “You were upset…”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“You’re a terrible liar, Chelsea. Fucking horrible at it. You don’t hide your feelings very well.”

“You think you know just about everything there is to know about me, don’t you?”

“Not everything. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to read you. It’s one of the things I like about you, though. You’re one of the least fake people I’ve ever met.”

“Then, tell me. Why do you think I was upset?”

“Honestly? I think you’re confused about me.”

“Yes. I think you’re wondering why I opted not to have dinner with you and instead ended up with a woman I’d literally just met, someone who isn’t as sweet as you and sure as fuck isn’t as pretty as you. So, you’re wondering what the hell I was thinking. Am I right?”

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

He continued, “I know we haven’t known each other for very long, but I do feel a connection with you, okay? If you’ve sensed something, you’re not imagining it.”

“Well, if I wasn’t confused before…now I definitely am.”

“I feel like I need to say this now, because I can’t stand the thought of you thinking that I somehow find you undesirable when it’s exactly the opposite.”

I crossed my arms. “Again. Not following you.”

He closed his eyes as if to try to find the right words. “It’s just that I know for sure that I can’t ever be what someone like you needs in a boyfriend, in a partner. It’s not that we wouldn’t have fun or be great together at first. I’m just not good for you in the long-term—not marriage material. And the reasons are too complex to get into, except to say that it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with me. I can’t, in good conscience, start something with a girl like you.”

“A girl like me…”

“Yes. You’re not the kind of girl a guy takes home for a quick fuck. You’re the girl he keeps.”

Right. Just like Elec did.
