Inside the Author with 20 Questions: N.A. Alcorn

1. What is one thing about you that would surprise us?
I started nursing school at 17 and graduated when I was 20. I was saving lives before I was old enough to drink alcohol. GAH.

2. What would an ideal day be for you?
Spending the day at Pelican Pub & Brewery in Pacific City, Oregon with my husband. We’d just sit on the deck, drink beers, and watch the waves roll in.

3. What is your favorite curse word?
Boy oh boy, how do I narrow it down?

I guess anything with the word fuck in it. Yeah, that’s generally a big time “Fuck yes” for me.

4. What is your favorite movie?
Sixteen Candles. It’s an oldie, but goodie. Plus, who doesn’t love Jake Ryan? The red sports car? The birthday cake and candles on the dining table scene? Be still, my beating heart.

5. What is your favorite indulgence?
Candy, for sure. And I don’t discriminate, I’ll grab peanut butter M&M’S just as quickly as I’ll grab Sour Patch Kids.

6. What profession would you not like to do?
A window cleaner. The mere idea of being twenty stories high with a squeegee and bucket has me hyperventilating.

7. Who is your celebrity crush?
I can’t pick just one. So, I’ll give you my top 3.

Taylor Kitsch. Because Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights is the ultimate.

Kristen Wiig. She’s proof that humor is sexy on a girl.

Brandon Boyd from the band Incubus. Fourteen years and sixteen concerts later, he’s still at the top of my list.

8. What is your FB relationship status (single, married, it’s complicated)?
Happily Married

9. What is your biggest phobia?
Heights. See #6.

10. What are your favorite foods?
Cereal (Not Raisin Bran or Corn Flakes. I’m talking the good shit. The delectable, sugary, cavity-inducing kind.) Chocolate. Donuts. Pizza.

11. What are you least favorite foods.
Anything that doesn’t have chocolate.

12. You are at a concert, who are you with and who are you seeing?
I’m with my husband. And we’re probably seeing Incubus, Arctic Monkeys, The Neighbourhood, The Black Keys, or Muse.

13. What is your favorite quote?
I have so many quotes from books and movies that I adore, but song lyrics are generally my go to for inspiration. The cool thing about lyrics is that they can mean different things for different people. This one is one of my favorites and it’s from the song “If Not Now, When?” by Incubus.

I’ve waited all my life

If not now, when will I?

Stand up and face the bright light

Don’t hide your eyes

    It’s time

14. What is your all-time favorite book?
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

One of the first books that invoked my love for reading.

“Stay Gold, ponyboy.”

15. If you could hang out one day with your favorite writer, who would it be and what would you do?
I’d love to hang out with Stephen King and just pick his brain. I should preface that I hate scary movies. I pretty much hate anything within the horror genre. But Stephen King, I’ll always read his books no matter what. He’s that talented. He just has a way of delivering a story, letting it unfold in the most brilliant way.

I’m sure my love for his writing stems from my father reading Cycle of the Werewolf to my sister and me when were kids. As crazy as it sounds, it’s one of the fondest memories of my childhood.

16. Out of your male characters in your books who would you marry, kill, fuck?
Marry – Dylan Bissette (Changing Colors Series)
Fuck – Nixon West (Covertly Strong)
Kill – Alistair Wallace (Changing Colors Series)

17. Out of your female characters in your books who would you marry, kill, fuck?
Marry  – Brooke Sawyer (Changing Colors Series)
Fuck – Amy Jackson (Infamous Series)
Kill – Veronica (Infamous Series)

18. What word or words do you like to read in a book (can pertain to describing anything or just in general)?
Words used to describe a scene/location so well, that I feel as if I’m there. Words used when something hurts so bad the character feels like they can’t move on. Words used when someone is falling in love.

All of the words. I want/love all of them

19. What word or words do you not like to read in a book (can pertain to describing anything or just in general)?
Anything that compares a vagina to seafood. Bearded clam, Tuna Taco…yeah, I’ll pass on those.

20. Who is your favorite Star Wars character?
Yoda, that adorable, green Jedi Master

“Do or do not, there is not try.”

Thank you so much After Dark Book Lovers! I had so much fun answering these questions!
