People think they have Camille Logan nailed: daddy’s girl; beautiful, spoiled young woman with her father’s bank balance to fund her lifestyle. But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she’s made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father’s ruthless business dealings. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating–both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn’t the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don’t mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn’t the woman she’s perceived to be. She’s warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille. But he knows he can’t have both.

Jodi Ellen Malpas has written a standalone and it is a romance with a little suspense in the mix.  So for those of you that do not like cliffhangers, you will not be disappointed.  On a personal note, I do not mind cliffhangers and whenever Ms. Malpas has written them, I do not have have to wait a long time for the next book in the series.

Ok so let’s get on the road with my review.  This book is a little different from Ms. Malpas’ previous books which is a good thing, it had a little element of suspense.  What I enjoyed as well was the dueling POVs which the author hasn’t done in the past.  I like getting into the head of both main characters.  We first meet Jake Sharp, he was formerly in the military before becoming a bodyguard to important people.  You can tell from the beginning that he is suffering from some serious PTSD, but also some issue regarding a past love.  He is hired by Trevor Logan who is a very shrewd business man (whom I detest and so will you) to protect his socialite daughter Camille Logan.  Camille is also a model but is also a clothing designer with her bestie.  Camille is not happy with having someone following her all day long because Daddy Dearest is such a control freak.

Jake was a little judgmental of Camille.  You know that saying “never judge a book by it’s cover”?  Well he certainly did with Camille.  She is not what he expected at all.  She is very independent with a brain.  Their growing attraction is one for the books.  Their banter and sexual chemistry, holy hell Jodi Ellen can write some good sexy times.  I wanted to know who was trying to hurt Camille and why.  And reading about Jake’s PTSD was pretty sad, but as I mentioned there was another story regarding his past which I felt should have been a little more focused.

Overall, I really enjoyed this standalone and the writing is a little different which, again as I mentioned, I liked.  I hope Jodi Ellen continues to write dueling POVs, she wrote Jake’s POV very well.  I really liked Camille and fiery spirit.  Her dad can suck it!  I am a fan of Jodi Ellen Malpas and cannot wait to read her next book.

1. What is one thing about you that would surprise us?
I hate peanut butter. Despise it! Everyone thinks that because Jesse loves it, I do, too.

2. What would an ideal day be for you?
Writing 15K words and not deleting one of them the next day. This never happens, but I live in hope!

3. What is your favorite curse word?
F*ck. I say it way too often, and sometime don’t even realize. My dad hates women swearing, so I have to be super careful around him. He won’t speak to me for a week if I swear in front of him.

4. What is your favorite movie?
Oohhhhhh… That changes from one month to the next, depending on my mood. Casino Royale is one of my faves. It’s was Daniel Craig’s first time as James Bond, and he more than nailed it. It’s the best James Bond movie ever made, and I’m a sucker for a hedonistic playboy

5. What is your favorite indulgence?
Wine :-/

6. What profession would you not like to do?
Chef. I hate cooking, and I’m rubbish at it.

7. Who is your celebrity crush?
Daniel Craig, and I’m devastated that he’s stood down as James Bond

8. What is your FB relationship status (single, married, it’s complicated)?

9. What is your biggest phobia?
Snakes. I shudder just typing the word.

10. What are you favorite favorite foods?
Smoked salmon. Scrambled eggs. Cheese.

11. What are you least favorite food?
I’m not crazy about chocolate. Most women look at me like I’m an alien when I turn it down. My mum is a chocoholic and as a child it was literally everywhere, freely available. No one wants what they can easily have!

12. You are at a concert, who are you with and who are you seeing?
I’m with my bestest friend forever Kate, and we’re seeing The Stone Roses.

13. What is your favorite quote?
Anything inspirational.
Kate says my house is like inspiration quote overload I have them everywhere. One I always tell myself and anyone else who needs it, is “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, then it’s not the end.” I think Lennon once said this.

14. What is your all-time favorite book?
I honestly don’t have an all-time favourite. There are too many amazing books out there.

15. If you could hang out one day with your favorite writer, who would it be and what would you do?
There’s nothing better than finding a bar and cementing yourself to it with your writer friends. We drink, talk, drink, drink, drink, talk, talk, talk, drink some more, talk some more, and drink LOTS LOTS more. It’s great to know I’m not alone in my mind’s madness sometimes, and spending time with your writer pals makes you feel almost normal. Add alcohol and the conversation can get very interesting!

16. Out of your male characters in your books who would you marry, kill, fuck?
Marry – Jesse
Fuck/Worship– Miller
Kill – Charlie Anderson

17. Out of your female characters in your books who would you marry, kill, fuck?
Seriously?! Okay…
Marry  – Ava – she’s the most like me so if I have to spend my life with someone, it would be her.
Fuck – Kate. She’s sassy and unapologetic.
Kill – Lauren/Ruth Ward. She hurt Jesse. I despise her!

18. What word or words do you like to read in a book (can pertain to describing anything or just in general)?
I love words full stop. I just love reading how writers use them in different and unique ways that define their writing style.

19. What word or words do you not like to read in a book (can pertain to describing anything or just in general)?
Moist. I think this is standard.

20. Who is your favorite Star Wars character?
Never watched Star Wars!
