They took too much.
Left too little.
I had nothing to lose…until him.

I didn’t expect him.
I didn’t want to fall in love.
But I can’t let him go.

Logan Bennett makes the world a safer place.
He’s brilliant.
He’s a hero.
He locks away the sick and depraved.
But while he’s saving lives, I’m taking them. Collecting the debts that are owed to me.

Ten years ago, they took from me. They left me for dead.
They should have made sure I stayed dead.

Now I’m taking from them.
One name at a time.

I’ve trained for too long.
I’ve been patient.
I can’t stop now.

Revenge is best served cold…

They never see me coming, until I paint their walls red.

Logan doesn’t know how they hurt me. He doesn’t know about the screams they ignored. He doesn’t know how twisted that town really is.

He just knows people are dying.
He doesn’t know he’s in love with their killer.

No one suspects a dead girl.
And Logan doesn’t suspect the girl in his bed.

They’re looking for a monster.
Not a girl who loves red.
Not a girl in love.

I’m a faceless nightmare.

At least until I tell them the story they’ve pretended never happened.

But in the end, will Logan choose them? Or will we watch them burn together?

Grace Review

Given that this serial is now complete, I thought it would be best to do one overall review.  This is not a serial where you’ll read one book and then come back to the rest later.  You’ll either be hooked and begin binging on each book, like myself and fellow blog reviewer, Miri, or it won’t be your cup of tea.  While I did an overall review, I did add some comments about each installment so you have a sense of what you are getting into.

If you were to ask me what my favorite romance trope was, it would be the anti-hero, hands down.  So color me surprised that this book features the rare but just as special anti-heroine.  Lana Myers is not your ordinary heroine.  Not everyone will like her.  But I’m not everyone.  I love when an author presents a deeply flawed character and builds a story to actual have compassion for that character.  Immediately I had to compare her to some of my favorite anti-heroines – Deanna Madden (A.R. Torre’s series) and Nora Kessler (In the Company of Killers by JA Redmerski).  Just like those heroines, Lana has a blood lust, and maybe some psychotic tendencies.

Once you learn what happened in her past, can you blame her?  No one can survive that sort of trauma and not be affected.  Does she do the right thing?  Well, that’s the million dollar question. Especially if you believe in the idea of justifiable homicide.

Warning: I will try to keep things as vague as possible in this recap of each book, but if you want to avoid any possible spoilers, skip this section after the book 1 recap.

Book 1, The Risk

This book sets everything up.  We are introduced to the killer.  And the killer meets someone who could be a game changer.

What I liked most about this installment was not just the anti-heroine/vengeance theme, but how it is presented.  The author provides just enough violence and gore to the reader, as if to say, “Can you handle it?”

His whole life is nice and shiny.  Just like all of them.  I can’t wait to paint it red.

As of the publication of this review (and hopefully going forward) book 1 is free.  So if this story may be too much for some readers, they have made no financial investment in it, and not much time, as this is the shortest of the 5 books.  For those readers who like the darker elements presented in the book, they can then chose to continue.

It is worth noting that if you are bothered by the scenes in book 1, you probably should stop because they only escalate and become darker.  Obviously, this had all of the elements to pique my interest and I had to move right on to book 2.

Book 2, Sidetracked

While in the first installment of this series, you may not connect with the killer, I felt like this book gives you that connection.  A reason to cheer for them, even though they may be committing acts that are morally wrong.

That connection is made as the author builds sympathy for the killer.  While we still don’t know their backstory, we are shown that they have compassion for others.  That they want others to pay for the wrongs they have since gotten away with.  And that would be the overall theme of the series, as we’ll come to learn.

In showing a more human side of the killer, the author also sets up a future alliance. Someone who may have the killer’s back and see the big picture.  To avoid spoilers, I’ll leave it at that.

I will be honest, you will have to let the author take some creative writing liberties during parts of this series, as I think it would be highly unlikely that the FBI is stretched so thin that the same team is working multiple cases.  But for this story, that overlap is needed, so as the reader, you just need to go with it.

Let the sick bastard come.  I need something to stab.

If you weren’t hooked with the first book, you will be with this one.

Book 3, Scarlet Angel

This may have been my favorite installment of the series.  Why?  Because we get to see how much of a badass Lana can be.  I literally was doing internal cartwheels and cheering on the sidelines for her.  YOU GO GIRL!!!  What better way to do this than to put her up against a formidable foe.

“I have psychopathic tendencies, but I’m not a psychopath.”

This installment also brings us to Delaney Grove, the killer’s hometown.  Where is all started.  Do we get answers?  I’ll leave you in suspense on that, but I will say, Lana and Jake show how much planning went into this return.

Prepare for shit to go down!

The water will run red.  Just like your sins.  The truth won’t be painted over anymore.

Book 4, All the Lies

This installment slowly exposes the secrets that so many people have covered up for so long.  It is scary how deep the corruption went and who all played a role in it.

The power of one man and the mistakes of many of brought to light.  And the killer will make those people pay for their sins.  Sounds creepy, right?  Yes, this is probably one of the more violent installments in the series.

And the cliffhanger, is probably the biggest of the series.  You’ll want book 5 ready to go once you finish this one.  *sobs*

I thought love would rip my heart out.  I thought it would set me on fire.  Instead, it turned me into ice.

Book 5, Paint it All Red

As you can guess by the title, this is the end game.

” . . . you still view her as a monster by not meeting your generalized populous version of morality.”

Will the killer complete their vengeance?
And with that, will they walk away after?
How will the FBI and Logan handle the new revelation?

Parts of this story broke my heart, parts gave me hope.

I will say that I was surprised on who the original killer was, once revealed.  I had it all wrong.  I love that the author didn’t allow me to figure it out earlier on.

And the ending, perfectly fit for this serial.  It may not be the right thing, but it was appropriate one for this dark vengeance theme.

If you didn’t figure it out already, I LOVED LOVED LOVED this serial.  It’s a heart racing, mind bending, faced paced thrill ride.  It is exactly what I needed to kick off the New Year.  A MUST READ for anyone that likes a darker theme and is open to a morally questionable cast of characters.
