The power of pleasure…

Gabriel Miller took everything from me. My family. My innocence. My home. The only thing I have left is the determination to get back what’s mine.

He thinks he’s beaten me. He thinks he’s won. What he doesn’t realize is that every pawn has the chance to become a queen.

And the game has only just begun.

THE KNIGHT is book two in the Endgame series from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.

Warning: do not read this review if you haven’t read book one.

This book kicks off where the last book left us, with Avery losing everything.
Her friends (except one).
Her dignity.
Her virginity.
Her house.

Who is at the center of it all?
Gabriel Miller.

Is he the villain or the Knight in shining armor?
The author certainly plays with the reader, and Avery’s emotions as it isn’t quite clear whose side he is really on.  Eventually it becomes clear, but not without a bit of unnecessary heartbreak.

While there were a lot of hot moments between Avery and Gabriel in this installment, they unsettled me for two reasons.  First, because I didn’t like how quickly Avery shut off her brain around him, just because he knew how to turn her on.  I wanted her to put up more of a fight (and to be clear, she does fight back, at times, but it usually ended with her giving in, which didn’t work for me).  Second, the hot moments are end capped, so to speak, but cold ones.  Gabriel says something cruel, then touches her, claiming her as his, take what he needs, and then says another off handed rude comment.  Any heat from the moment, quickly fizzles.

This book/series, is best for those that like the Alpha claiming, the savior to turn everything around for the heroine.  If that is your cup of tea, than you will enjoy this installment.

“And you’re the object of my depravity, the target of every dark wish, the canvas I want to paint.  I won’t be satisfied until I’ve marked every inch of you, inside and out.”

I personally wanted Avery to grow more of a backbone.  Yes, she has lost everything, but she doesn’t actively do anything to turn her life around.  She seems to just be sitting around, waiting for her money.  I wanted her to fight more.  She has the smarts, which we get glimpses of, but she needs to put those smarts to use to make her life better, and stop relying on a man to fix everything for her.

I’ll also note, because it was a surprise to me, that this series isn’t over.  Nope, there is a book three, with lots of open questions to be answered.  A new villain has been exposed, and we’ll have to wait and see how far he will take things going forward.
