Pucked Off, an all-new emotional and sexy STANDALONE from Helena Hunting is LIVE!!

***A Standalone novel in The Pucked Series***

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance.”

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

So are you a fan of the Pucked series?  Those couple of books were funny and sexy right?  Violet and Alex with the inappropriate sex shenanigans, Miller trying not get in trouble with puck bunnies and win Sunny’s heart, or how Randy Balls and Lily try not to have sex in their friend’s bathroom, or wherever they find an available surface, you remember that lively bunch right?  Let me tell you something, Pucked Off is a totally different read ladies and gentlemen, and I loved that the author took this book to a different emotional level.  But if this is your first Puck book, then you can totally read it and not be confused, but eventually, you should read the others.

If you read the other books, then you already know who Lance “Romance” Romero already is.  He is the defensive player for the team, loves getting into fights in the game, pulling pranks on his teammates oh and has the most contentious relationship with the former team trainer, Tash.  Lance wanted more, but Tash would rather play head games with him instead.  Boy did I not like Tash!  I will admit, I had thought this book was going to be about how they finally got together, but when you start reading the first chapter, you will not be liking Tash as well.

Enter Poppy.  After Lance got into a bar fight, he’s beaten up pretty badly, that he needs to see a massage therapist and since one isn’t available for the team, the current trainer pulls some strings. Did I tell you Lance has an aversion to being touched?  Yeah, I’ll will get back to that in a bit.  Poppy does not want to take on Lance as a client.  Poppy always had a crush on Lance since she was a teen, a “seven-minutes to heaven” kiss, an almost hook up a few years back, but he doesn’t really remember her.  But she needs to do her job, and notices how uncomfortable and tense he is at the beginning of her massage, yet Lance starts to relax around the only woman that can touch his body.

Lance is confused, though he has slept with countless woman, he would never let them get so intimately involved with touching him, not even Tash, yet Poppy is like a siren’s call with her hands. He’s immediately taken with the fiery redhead.  He wants Poppy so badly, that he’s willing to give up his sessions with her to just get to know her.

Lance’s story is going to break your heart.  I don’t know how this author did it, with the first few being a romantic/comedy, this was far from funny.  A very emotional read.  As much as Poppy wanted to guard her heart, she fell hard for the brooding Ginger.  As much as Lance did not want to share his awful past, having been burned, he opened up to Poppy, yet he felt so undeserving. I’ve never wanted anyone the way I want her.  I don’t want to claim, fuck, devour.  I want to be worthy, and I’m afraid I never will be.”  Yes, enter the waterworks.

Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster.  Yes, you get to see some of your favorites here and there, and there was a few funny moments with Violet and her overshares, but the love story here was so sweet and gut wrenching.  Like I said before, I did not expect this book to take a serious tone and when an author does that, it’s a big plus for me.  So put your big drawers on, have some tissues ready, maybe a glass of wine, and get ready for Lance and Poppy’s story.  Now I’m curious if the author will be writing Darren’s story.

Armed with my clipboard, I walk down the hall to the waiting room. Lance is impossible to miss. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a sweatshirt and the hood is covering half of his face, he’s more than six feet of broad, hockey-playing man.

He’s so wide his shoulders encroach on the chairs on either side, which would explain why no one is sitting next to him. He’s slouched down so his head rests on the back of the chair, and his hands are clasped in his lap, a baseball cap hanging off one knee. His lips, plush and soft—I know since I’ve had them on mine; it might have been a decade ago, but I remember it clearly—are parted. He looks like he’s asleep.

I clear my throat. “Lance Romero?”

He doesn’t move.

Bernadette, the receptionist, gives me a meaningful look.

I clear my throat again and call his name a second time. He jolts awake and the hood falls back, exposing his face. It’s not in good shape. He has a black eye and bruises on his left cheek. There’s a fly bandage across one eyebrow.

Sadly, he’s still hot.

He blinks a few times, yawns, and smacks his lips, his tongue touching the split in the bottom one. His gaze sweeps the room and finally lands on me. Heat explodes in my cheeks and courses through my limbs, warming me from the inside out as he starts at my sneaker-clad feet and roams up over my yoga pants to my company-issued T-shirt before stopping at my face. I can’t look directly at him for more than a couple of seconds. I sincerely hope he doesn’t remember me. I cannot go there and also be professional.

I’m sure the smile he gives me has melted many a panty off a slutty bunny. Mine stay right where they’re supposed to, wedged up my ass.

I force a polite, professional veneer. “I’m ready for you now.”
