“I loved you before. I will love you forever.”

Nikolai Alexei Young was born with a special gift…one he’d do anything to lose. The heart and soul of every person he comes into contact with is an open book to his heightened senses. Colorful emotions, whispers of thoughts, the sour tastes of old memories…He feels them all. The sci-fi books would call him an empath. For Nikolai, his ability has made him an exile. He roams the U.S. alone, avoiding the glut of life in big cities, and using his innate talents to win money in underground poker games. Just enough to keep going, one town to the next. He has no hope that his life can be anything else, until he meets her…

At nineteen, Fiona Starling was trapped in an ugly, desperate situation until she freed herself the only way she knew how. Now three years later, living outside Savannah, Georgia, she is rebuilding her life on her own terms; seizing every moment and saving every penny so that she might fulfill her dream of moving to the raw wilderness of Costa Rica. But behind her carefree smile beats the heart of a lonely young woman haunted by her past, until a chance encounter with a tattooed stranger changes everything…

Fiona takes Nikolai under her roof for three sultry nights, waiting out the rain of a summer storm. She grows more and more fascinated by this brooding stranger with whom she shares an intense physical connection—a connection so strong, she wonders if there is something between them beyond lust and passion. Nikolai is shocked to discover that Fiona calms the raging turmoil in his heart. She alone silences the din of other people’s lives, and envelops him in the sweet beauty of her inner self. Every moment he’s with her—every touch of her skin—brings him closer to the peace that’s been eluding him his entire life.

But Fiona harbors secrets that she is too terrified to reveal. After Nikolai confesses his unique ability, she is caught between wanting to believe him and fearing he’ll eventually unearth her own dark past. When the unthinkable happens, Fiona’s plans come crashing down, and Nikolai discovers his hated ability might be the only thing that can save the woman he loves.

Sugar & Gold is a new adult romance with shades of the paranormal and is the second book in the Dreamcatcher novels, a series of interconnected STANDALONES.

Grace Review

A beautiful and passionate tale of two broken souls coming together to heal one another.

Nikolai Young is lost.
He has no home, no friends, no family, no direction.
Suffering from a condition gives him to ability to see one’s thoughts, he travels town to town with minimal personal interactions, funding his travels on his poker winnings.

Fiona Starling is hiding.
She escaped from a man who demoralized and controlled her every move. Despite being away, the man’s voice continues to haunt her, breaking her spirit. But she has a plan to move forward and is saving up enough money for her big move to Costa Rica.

“I’m stronger than I look.”

They come together for one night. Or that’s all it was supposed to be.
The attraction in instant.
The chemistry is scorching (one of the author’s hotter novels, imo).
But more than that, their brief interactions calm the voices in their heads. Giving them true peace for the first time.

“I want this. You. The power of you.” She looked up at me, her eyes dark with yearning. “I want all of it.”

One thing I love about this author’s work is her ability to give us flawed characters who are suffering, yet present them in a way where there is a balance of strength and weakness. The power of a character overcoming hardship is something that will always win me over. And you will want to cheer for Nikolai and Fiona, because they are two individuals who are fighting to survive.

While Nikolai is pretty much a lone soul, Fiona has a great support system with her coworkers and neighbors. I loved how they had her back and stood up to protect her. And the sweet connection Fiona shared with the neighbor’s daughter, Hailey, was heartbreaking.

“Find the sunshine, Fiona. That’s all I want for you.”

Although it is not necessary to read book one in this series, How to Save a Life, I still would highly recommend it. First, it is a great book. Duh!! Second, there is some overlap with this book as Evan plays a key role in helping Nikolai. It is also important to note that this has some paranormal elements, with Nikolai’s special abilities, but like book one, this is a very minor theme, and you won’t see anything like vampires, shifters, etc.

Once again, this author has impressed me. Her creativity and flawless writing are just part of why she has become a favorite author of mine. If you are looking for a beautiful redemption story with a twist, look no further than this book.

She sighed and began, “Aryas—“

“Get you don’t want to and won’t push it. Hope you do. Hope you get over it. Hope you come back to us and to you in all the ways you should do that. You can’t find that in you…” He shrugged but didn’t stop coming at her. “That’s the way it is. I can’t push that. You gotta find that in you. But connecting with you. Seeing where you’re at. Getting you to come back to the family. Taking your pulse is only part of why I asked you here. I also got another reason.”

Evangeline took another sip of her coffee before she asked, “And what’s that?”

“Got a sub for you.”

She blinked and her stomach pitched.

“Sorry?” she queried.

“Perfect for you. No strings. No boundaries. This guy is not looking to connect. He’s not looking for a relationship. Hell, sheer number of Dommes he goes through, you might only get one crack at him before he vanishes from your life. But at least you’ll get off the way you like it that one time. And if you can keep him around awhile, you might have some fun, break yourself back in, give yourself what you need, without any baggage.”

That all sounded way too good to be true.

But still.

“I’m not…I don’t think…” She swallowed. “I’m not ready for that, and to be honest, Ary, I’m not sure I’ll ever go back there.”

“Fool thing to think, more fool thing to do,” Aryas returned instantly. “Especially when you got a chance to have a go with this guy. You got a shot at a guy like this guy, you should take it. And I mean that for you. Only for you. For where you’re at. For what I suspect you need about now. He doesn’t want to hold hands. He doesn’t want to share a drink in the hunting ground. He doesn’t want you to give him your number or stake your claim on him in the club or anywhere. He wants you to get him off and he’s open to anything you wanna do to pull that off.”

He’s open to anything you wanna do to pull that off.

She fought squirming in her seat and it made her angry.

This was not a part of her life anymore.
