Synopsis

Shame. Panic. Desire. Dominance. Disgust. All feelings that I was familiar with from the age of sixteen. That’s when I met Ana. The girl next door who became so much more. Until her, I was alone in the dark desires that I didn’t understand, that I couldn’t reconcile. My best friend, she accepted me. Helped me see that there was no shame in the things that we both craved. Her submission was a drug, my dominance over her a high that I’d never experienced. When we were together, I was at peace for the first time in my life.

But it was too good to last. Our own guilt over our feelings, of our appetite for pain and pleasure, destroyed us.

I was convinced that all I needed was a chance, just one more chance to overcome my shame, and Ana would be able to trust me again.

If only it were that easy.

Shame Me Not is a coming of age type of book. This book takes you into three parts, high school, college and adulthood. I know I am getting ahead of myself, but I wanted to give you a sense of how the book is broken up. It also can be a friends to lovers trope that most readers love.

Ana and Kevin have became best friends when she and her mom moved next door to his home. Her mom having been recently divorced decided to move back to her hometown. Kevin immediately took Ana under his wings since she would be the new girl in his high school, and hey he was super popular. Ana and Kevin were extremely close, but not close enough to know that both shared desires that they both felt “shameful” about feeling. They spent the first several years just friends until they find out their mutual sexual fantasies. Of course, shit hit the fan at the end of high school.

In Part II, Kevin is trying to enjoy college life, but can’t seem to forget Ana and how things played out during their senior year. Ana does come back and transfer to his college after her mom gets diagnosed with cancer. Again, their desire for pain and inflicting pain comes back to the forefront. They trust each other to deliver their sexual indulgences and procavilites. But Ana felt that with Kevin feeling guilty hurting her and she feeling guilty wanting the hurt, that maybe she should just try for “normal”, which again leads both Ana and Kevin to part ways.

Moving to Part III and now four years after college and their essential breakup, Ana meet up again in an unlikely way, during her mother’s funeral. You know, the heart and desires want what they want, and both Ana and Kevin come to the realization that they need each other more than anything. This book had lots of angst and moments of despair for both h/h. These two had this dom/sub situation going on that started at such a young age, not really realizing at first what they were desiring wasn’t anything “wrong”. I liked how the author took me in the hows and whys and the in-betweens. I also loved that both Kevin and Ana were truly friends and deeply cared for one another, despite their confusion with their desires. This is my first book by Ms. Cole. She will be someone that I need to add to my ever growing TBR. If you’re looking for friends/lovers with a bit of BDSM and angst, then you need to add Shame Me Not to your list as well.

Fiona Cole is a military wife and a stay at home mom with a degree in Biology and Chemistry. As much as she loved science she decided to postpone her career to stay at home with her two little girls and immersed herself in the world of books until finally deciding to write her own. Where You Can Find Me is Fiona’s debut novel and will hopefully be the first of many.
