Life on his ranch could be their future. If they can overcome their past.

Felicity’s life story reads like the script to a bad soap opera. Girl’s high-school boyfriend becomes a drug addict. Girl falls for boyfriend’s best friend. Girl leaves them both behind only to return home years later for murdered ex-boyfriend’s funeral. Now she’s back home in Montana, ready to start fresh. She’s got a long list of amends to make and relationships to rebuild, including one with the man who has owned her heart for sixteen years.

Silas doesn’t need much. He’s got a great horse, close friends and the Lucky Heart ranch, but something has always been missing. He’s not an idiot. He knows the missing piece is Felicity. And now that she’s returned to Prescott, he’s got a second chance to win her heart. This time, the only thing standing in his way is history. Drudging up the past is going to be about as painful as playing tug of war with barbed wire. But if they can heal old wounds, he’ll get the girl he should have had all along.

Grace Review
A second chance love story about overcoming guilt and making amends, while finding a new life and dreams in a small town.

If you’ve been following this series (not required to read this book), then you’ll remember Felicity who is introduced as Jess’ sister and made quite the first impression. A supremely bitchy impression at that. And at the beginning of this book, that bitchy impression does not change. However, it doesn’t take long to realize that that nasty attitude is a defense mechanism for dealing with pain.

Felicity and Silas’ history is far from pretty, all because of her youthful and impulsive actions. And the guilt she carries from those actions seems to haunt her daily. To list out the offenses she believes she’s totally responsible for:
Getting her boyfriend, Wes, into drugs.
Cheating on Wes.
Leaving Silas with no explanation.

Initially, if you look at the list above, you may hate her. But there’s a whole lot more to the story that will ultimately have you sympathizing for her. At least that’s how I felt.

There are times where Felicity’s guilt hinders on her ability to move forward, particularly with Silas. The two have a history and an obvious connection between them, but the past and their individual mistakes stand between them moving forward. Ultimately, one finally steps up to the plate to drive things home, it just takes some time for that to happen.

This time around, I didn’t want her running to me as an escape. This time around, I wanted her to finally choose me just because I made her happy.

What I loved about Felicity is her growth in the book and how she steps up time and time again to help others. That compassion and the friendships she builds, does bring some trouble her way. This book does follow the formula of the previous books, with the woman unknowingly putting herself in a dangerous position. But lucky for her, there are plenty of heroes in this town.

While you don’t need to have read the previous books in this story, if you did, there is a lot of character crossovers, particularly with Jess (her brother), Gigi and Maisy. I loved being part of this Prescott community, with its small-town gossip, annual traditions, and comradery. Even better is when a new character is introduced and you can instantly see the potential for more stories. I’m looking forward to The Outpost, out next.
