Story: 4 stars
This book two in the series and the plot doesn’t slow down, in fact, this book seems to kick everything in high gear.

At the end of book one, we know several things:
Gina Royal (now going by Gwen) will do anything to protect her kids.
Sam trusts her for now and is willing to help out however he can.
Melvin has escaped, and everyone is at risk.

Given all of those facts, I thought the bulk of this story would center on Melvin. But the story took on a much bigger foe, Absalom, who Gwen previously trusted.

I won’t get into the details about Absalom, but they are clearly the opposite of what Gwen expected, needed, deserved. They are rooted in evil and manipulating others. This book showcases their (yes, it is hard at this point to think this is just one person) skills in manipulation.

Separately, this story also delves further into the lives of Connor (formerly Brady) and Lanny (formerly Lily), Gwen’s kids, now being watched/protected by Javier. This time away from their mom gives them time to explore their fears, anger, and pain, given everything they have been through. And at times that was not a good thing.

Remember my first point, how Gwen will do anything for her kids? Well, the events that transpire between her and her kids in this book made me absolutely livid!!! I get their first impressions, but wow, they offer her nothing. It amazed me how quickly and ruthlessly they turned on her.

Just like Sam and the kids experience in this book, there will be moments of doubt about Gwen. When you are wondering if this is all some evil twist by the author. It certainly crossed my mind a couple times. But then I recalled all Gwen’s previous actions and realized, either she’s the world’s best actress, or people are too quick to judge a video as truth.

This story truly highlights the extent of evil and how far and powerful that evil can be. It also highlights the sheer determination of Gwen to fight back for everyone, even if they gave up on her.

This story has a satisfying conclusion, but there are still some loose ends, so to speak. Given that, I’m not surprised there is another book in the series. The synopsis hasn’t been revealed yet, but I have my theories on what it will be. . . another chance for Gwen to kick some ass!

Performance: 4.5 stars
This audio has four narrators for the book’s four POVs: Gwen, Sam, Connor and Lanny. I thought each did a great job in capturing the emotions of their character. You could feel their fears and heartbreak with each word, adding another layer to the storyline.

The changes in narration also added to build the tension, particularly in the second half of the book, as the plot ramps up. My quest for answers made this a difficult audio to stop when life got in the way.

Overall: 4 stars
This story packs a punch. It is full of revelations, twists and drama to keep you on your toes throughout. So, buckle up!
